2010 Performance Metrics

In fiscal year 2010, ASR provided a new parameterization for aerosol effects on cloud drizzle for incorporation into atmospheric models.

Goal: Improve Climate Models by developing a coupled climate model with fully interactive carbon and sulfur cycles, as well as dynamic vegetation to enable simulations of aerosol effects, carbon chemistry, and carbon sequestration by the land surface and oceans and the interactions between the carbon cycle and climate.

Overall Performance Measures

The overall performance measure includes specific metrics for reporting progress each quarter. This reporting process includes support documentation (usually a report or data file) appropriate for the metric.

1st Quarter Metric—Completed

Objective – Tabulate and make available a set of VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study (VOCALS) data showing pre-cloud aerosol size distributions, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentrations, and cloud droplet distributions.

Product Definition/Description – The milestone consists of time series of pre-cloud aerosol size distributions, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentrations, and cloud droplet distributions measured during the VOCALS campaign to be used in development of the subsequent quarterly deliverables.

Product Documentation/Deliverables – The first quarter milestone was achieved and was documented in Pre-Cloud Aerosol, Cloud Droplet Concentration, and Cloud Condensation Nuclei from the VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere Land Study (VOCALS) Field Campaign. The aerosol, CCN, and cloud droplet time series data set was developed and is available as an Microsoft Excel data file.

2nd Quarter Metric—Completed

Objective – Report results from model comparison of threshold function versus measurements.

Product Definition/Description – Tabulate and make available measurements of drizzle droplet number concentrations and/or drizzle water content from VOCALS campaign. Report comparison of data to model results from LDM (Liu, Daum, McGraw) drizzle threshold parameterization computed using measured cloud droplet number concentration and cloud liquid water content.

Product Documentation/Deliverables – The second quarter milestone was achieved and was documented in Evaluation of the Liu-Daum-McGraw (LDM) Drizzle Threshold Parameterization using Measurements from the VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere Land Study (VOCALS) Field Campaign. The drizzle droplet number concentrations, drizzle water content, cloud droplet, cloud water, and calculated threshold function time series data set are available for the three different days referenced in the metric report:

3rd Quarter Metric—Completed

Objective – Report comparisons of aerosol/CCN relationship parameterizations with data collected in the first quarter and best parameterization for VOCALS data set.

Product Definition/Description – Report contains overview description of data used and best model formulation, with narrative description of quality of fit using the chosen best parameterization.

Product Documentation/Deliverables – The third quarter milestone was achieved and was documented in Comparison of Aerosol and Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Relationship Parameterizations with Data Collected During the 2008 VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere Land Study (VOCALS) Field Campaign.

4th Quarter Metric—Completed

Objective – Report results of implementation of composite parameterization in single column model (SCM) to explore the dependency of drizzle formation on aerosol properties.

Product Definition/Description – Report describing implementation of drizzle parameterization in single-column Community Atmosphere Model (CAM), as well as predicted and observed dependency of drizzle formation on aerosol properties during VOCALS campaign.

Product Documentation/Deliverables – The fourth quarter milestone was achieved and was documented in Evaluation of the Dependency of Drizzle Formation on Aerosol Properties.
