Description

Several simulations using the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) have been performed in order to simulate MJO events. The simulations used explicit and parameterized convection and are performed with different resolutions (from 60 to 3km.) The model is able to initiate MJO and to simulate propagating mesoscale convective system (MCS)-like events embedded in the MJO in certain conditions. The large-scale convective envelope of the simulated MJO moves eastward. While the simulated MJO has a faster eastward propagation, it is generally consistent with reanalysis. Parameterized moist convection has significant effects on the structure and propagation of the simulated. We investigate the reasons which allow the model to initiate an MJO event and evaluate the simulation against observations.
