Description

The Workshop on Data Science is a scientific event organized by the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil that seeks to promote the dissemination of knowledge in management techniques, analysis, and visualization of scientific data. In its third edition (October 25-27, 2017), the workshop provided a full-day seminar and two days hands-on session to enable Brazilian researchers and students to explore, access, analyze, and visualize data from the Green Ocean Amazon (GOAmazon) campaign collected by the ARM Climate Research Facility. Attendance at this workshop included 240 participants in the seminar and 45 participants in the hands-on session, of which, over 30% were researchers and 70% were undergraduate and graduate computer science, domain scientist, or engineering students. Almost half of the participants were interested in the data science field and most were graduate students were pursuing research in computer engineering, geography, and/or information science. Other participants were several professors and leading climate researchers from Brazil. To gain familiarity with the campaign’s data, Giri Prakash, ARM's Data Service and Operations Manager, guided the exploration of the data available in the ARM Data Center. After this demonstration, participants were organized into multidisciplinary groups that chose an experiment based on a scientific problem of the GOAmazon campaign. The groups were responsible for creating a proposal based on a research question. They had to select appropriate GOAmazon data for visualization and analysis of the chosen problem. Dr. Bhargavi Krishna presented information about tools and technologies for visualization, storage, and data processing. Various visualization technologies and distributed data processing technologies were introduced. Other American institutions represented included the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which presented on science data lifecycle, planning, and policies. USGS also provided various topography, flow, and bathymetry data for analysis and visualization. A leading Professor from the University of Tennessee also participated and helped in group organization. This event also contributed to generating innovative ways of using GOAmazon data and applying data science and its tools to respond to challenging scientific questions. The Author will present key summaries, next steps, and feedback from the workshop.
