Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to participate with a project team towards a goal of improving our understanding of the processes that drive the lifecycle of deep convective clouds using observations and modeling. This research will explore the physical reasons and pathways for environmental/aerosol – convection interactions using both state-of-the-art observations, analysis techniques and modeling.

The position requires a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or related fields. Expertise in convective cloud processes, a familiarity with aerosol-convection interactions and/or cloud remote sensing is desirable. Experience with application of machine learning techniques and/or atmospheric modeling at large-eddy of cloud-resolving scales is beneficial. Strong communication skills are essential for engaging with team members, as well as the broader cloud and climate research community. Strong programming skills, such as a familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., Python, IDL, MATLAB, etc.) and handling large datasets is also recommended.

Position requirements:

  • A PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding processes that control clouds and/or aerosol-cloud interactions.
  • Solid communication, programming and collaborative skills.
  • A familiarity working with remote sensing instrumentation for clouds and precipitation, for instance cloud radar, scanning weather radar, and other surface instrumentation such as that operated by DOE (e.g., www.arm.gov ), NASA and/or NOAA agencies.

BNL is located on Long Island, NY, about 60 miles outside New York City, and is an equal opportunity employer.
