Description

The ECMWF global modelling system (Integrated Forecast System, IFS) is used for operational Numerical Weather Prediction in the form of a high resolution (16 km) simulation out to 10 days, a lower resolution ensemble of 50 members out to 15 days and monthly and seasonal prediction systems. The parametrizations in the model, including cloud and precipitation, must therefore work effectively across a wide range of resolutions and efforts continue to reduce systematic errors often apparent at all scales. This poster will describe recent developments to address systematic errors in the model, some aided by observations from the ARM program, including reducing the over-occurrence of drizzle and reduction of cloud-radiation errors over land and over the Southern Ocean.
