Description

The linkages between the Earth’s land surface and the atmospheric boundary layer are increasingly recognized as critical for addressing many climate feedback processes. The ARM Land Atmosphere Cloud Interaction (LACI) group formed recently to better understand these interactions and address related research questions. The group identified two land surface data sets--soil properties and land cover data--which did not currently exist for the ARM SGP site at a high spatial or temporal resolution. This poster communicates the current state of development for these products at the ARM External Data Center (XDC). A soil moisture value-added product (VAP) is now in evaluation mode and available through the ARM Data Discovery Tool. We are producing both a land use/land cover map and a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) map for a 300km X 300km land use/land cover product centered on the SGP Central Facility. The maps are based on National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) 1-meter resolution data and a courser-resolution land cover map (CropScape). In parallel, a machine-learning algorithm is under development to explore the possibility of speeding up the production of the land cover map. Finally, we recommend continuing strong interactions with the LACI group to best refine current and future product development.
