Description

Three-dimensional atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamic fields provide the necessary background to study aerosol and cloud processes. This presentation describes how the ARM constrained variational analysis algorithm is integrated with the WRF GSI data assimilation system to develop high-resolution three-dimensional atmospheric analysis over the ARM SGP. The constrained analysis conserves atmospheric mass and water at each high-resolution grid column within the WRF assimilation domain. The analysis is evaluated against independent ARM measurements and tested as initial conditions of WRF to forecast a convective event over the SGP during MC3E. The new constrained analysis improves the location and timing of the forecasted convective system, implying better atmospheric vertical velocity and advective tendencies fields from the new analysis than the standard GSI assimilation products. Differences between the new analysis and the operational data assimilation products are discussed.
