Breakout Description

The Department of Energy is one of many government agencies celebrating 2023 as the Year of Open Science (https://open.science.gov/). The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement user facility (ARM) and Atmospheric Systems Research (ASR) have long supported open science, starting with the open data that is openly available to anyone to use, to open-source software packages such as Py-ART, ACT, EMC2, and more, to open access to ARM’s computational infrastructure through JupyterHub and the ARM Data Workbench. The PI meeting will be an ideal platform for engaging with and educating the ARM and ASR communities about all the open science tools and activities that can be used to help them advance their research and make it more open in the process. This session covered overviews and tutorials of ARM's GitHub Organizations, Python-ARM Radar Toolkit, Atmospheric data Community Toolkit, and ARM's JupyterHub and Data Workbench.

Main Discussion

The first session in the series of open science breakouts was geared towards providing introductory presentations on ARM’s open science efforts, including ARM’s GitHub organizations, the Python-ARM Radar Toolkit (Py-ART), the Atmospheric data Community Toolkit (ACT), and ARM’s JupyterHub and Workbench resources. The session included tutorials on getting users started with JupyterHub as well as introductory tutorials on Python.

Key Findings

There is interest from the community in hosting PI software on ARM-Synergy but more outreach is needed to ensure the community is aware of the capability. There is a lot of interest in JupyterHub from the broader community and it was noted that the tutorial on JupyterHub and basics of Python were extremely helpful for many members of the ARM and ASR communities.

Needs

It would be valuable for the ARS form to request elevated JupyterHub priveleges to be in an easy-to-use web form for the users and not in the Servicenow portal.
