Breakout Description

The goal of this breakout session was to give an overview on who is doing what in our working group and to identify and discuss research priorities. The breakout was scheduled with several short (3-5 minute) presentations. Due to time constraints and number of presentations, this breakout primarily served the purpose of identifying and communicating some of the primary research activities related to aerosol processes.

Main Discussion

The first part of the meeting was devoted to the following past field campaigns related to aerosol processes (presenter’s name in parenthesis):
- GoAmazon2014/15 (Martin)
- HI-SCALE and TCAP (Fast)
- CARES (Zaveri)
- SAAS (Zelenyuk-Imre)
- BBOP (Sedlacek)
- ClearfLo (Williams)
The presentations above, along with all other presentations in this breakout, have been uploaded to the meeting website for public viewing.
Next, two ASR scientists, Ryan Moffet and Jim Hudson, gave presentations on some recent scientific results.
Allison McComiskey provided a summary of the DOE Aerosol Measurements Strategic Planning Workshop, which took place in February 2017. Her presentation provided some preliminary information on the recommendations for improving instruments and sampling methods across all ARM facilities.
Nicole Riemer presented some thoughts on the pathways that link atmospheric observations to models that describe them. She proposed a series of “Process Readiness Levels” for describing the relationship between an observation and its implementation in a model.
The breakout closed with a presentation by Ann Fridlind on the proposed ACPC project in Houston. This campaign could be of interest to the aerosol processes group.
