Breakout Description

This session discussed plans for the upcoming deployment of the second Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility mobile facility on the Aurora Australis during the Measurements of Aerosols, Radiation, and Clouds over the Southern Ocean (MARCUS) campaign.

Main Discussion

Greg McFarquhar provided an overview on the upcoming MARCUS campaign and reported on the site visit of the Aurora Australis that had been conducted the previous week. An updated plan for the arrangement of all of the instruments on the Aurora Australis was also presented. Discussion concentrated on instrument placement, steps to mitigate the effects of sea spray, the timeline for data availability, and needs for preliminary analysis of data.

Needs

A need to get high-resolution data saved following the ship was identified because they will be very useful for future analysis. It was noted that we need to get the latitude/longitude/time of the MARCUS cruises to Maike Ahlgrimm of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in a timely manner, so that she can generate the needed model output files.

Future Plans

To conduct MARCUS!
