Breakout Description

The main topic of discussion was the ASR convection workshop held at PNNL in February. The session was designed to provide a brief summary of the outcomes of the workshop and provide persons who could not attend an opportunity to share their perspectives.

Main Discussion

The scientific and technical aspects of the discussions focused on how ARM observations along with CRM and LES can be used to guide parameterization development as well as how radar simulators can be used to bridge some gaps. These points were also extensively discussed at the workshop as well and are documented in the report.
In terms of organization, it was noted in the discussions that a workshop with a similar objectives was held in the UK and the conclusions were very similar. As one of the outcomes of the UK workshop, a consortium of UK institutions is embarking on a five year, BP10 million researches and development project focused on the treatment of convection in next generation models. It was suggested that both ASR and the UK institutions can benefit from coordination. It was decided that a first step toward exploring potential areas of collaboration is exchanging the workshop reports. After the ASR PI meeting, Alison Stirling, Manager of the UK MetOffice’s Convection Group approached us with details of their five year project and expressed interest in exploring potential areas of coordination. We provided her with a copy of the draft ASR workshop report. She will visit PNNL in September for a different purpose and we plan to set up a meeting with her. The same week, William LaPenta, head of NCEP expressed interest in the workshop, in the report and in having NCEP be involved in any follow up activities.

Key Findings

International and National Operational agencies interested in the problem of treatment of convection in high-resolution models recognize the leadership of the ASR Program in this area and are interested in collaborations. Coordination could accelerate progress.

Needs

In order to maximize impact, agency-level meeting for coordinating activities could be organized. Potentially an integrated project that pools the unique capabilities of these (DOE, NCEP, UK MetOffice) and possibly other agencies interested in convection in high-resolution models could be proposed.

Decisions

• The workshop report needs to be disseminated even more widely, potentially through publication in the professional society (AMS, AGU) journals.
• The parties who expressed interest in coordinated work with ASR should be kept informed of follow-up activities and invited to participate as appropriate.

Future Plans

In September the convection team at PNNL will meet with Alison Stirling of MetOffice to explore potential areas of collaboration.
