Breakout Description

Presentations of early results from Aerosol and Cloud Experiments in Eastern North Atlantic (ACE-ENA)

Main Discussion

The session agenda included a number of short presentations on ACE-ENA early results followed by discussions. The session started with a presentation by Rob Wood on PBL structure, cloud, and aerosol-cloud interactions during ACE-ENA, and their seasonal differences. Yang Wang presented an overview of the vertical profiles of trace gases and aerosol properties (including size distribution, chemical composition, and optical) measured onboard the G-1 during both IOPs. Key aerosol sources and processes were discussed.

  • Baike Xi presented MBL microphysical properties retrieved from ground-based observations and aircraft in situ measurements during ACE-ENA.
  • Alex Laskin and Ryan Moffet showed early results on chemical imaging and spectromicroscopic analyses of particles collected during both IOPs.
  • Fan Yang talked about supersaturation fluctuations in stratocumulus cloud estimated by a novel approach using ground-based remote sensing.
  • Chunsong Lu and Neel Uday Desai presented entrainment mixing mechanisms and their scale dependence, using conventional cloud droplet probe measurements and centimeter-resolution holographic data during ACE-ENA, respectively.
  • Mark Miller showed simulations of summertime post-frontal transition cloudiness during the July 17-19 cold frontal passage, one of the golden cases during ACE-ENA IOPs.
  • Allison Aiken described aerosol measurements at the ENA site and a supplementary site, and an aerosol filter for the influences from local sources on the Graciosa Island.

Future Plans

  • An ACE-ENA overview manuscript will be developed, and is expected to be submitted to BAMS by the end of this year.
  • An inter-journal special issue will be proposed to ACP/AMT.
  • An ACE-ENA session will be organized at the AGU fall meeting this year.
