The aim of the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) ARM Symbiotic Simulation and Observation (LASSO) activity is to enhance the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s observations by using LES modeling to provide context and a self-consistent representation of the atmosphere surrounding ARM measurement sites. Hence, LASSO connects processes and facilitates improved understanding of the underlying physics.
The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), in partnership with the LASSO team, will hold a two-day hybrid tutorial Tuesday, May 2, and Wednesday, May 3, 2023. In-person attendees will join LASSO Principal Investigator William Gustafson at the physics department on UMBC’s main campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and participate in hands-on activities. Virtual tutorial sessions will be transmitted by Webex, allowing participation from across the globe.
During the two days, participants will learn more about the LASSO shallow convection scenario at ARM’s Southern Great Plains atmospheric observatory and about the LASSO-CACTI scenario for deep convection and how it differs from the shallow convection approach. Participants will also learn how they may access the data for their research or classwork, and how they can use the LASSO evaluation software on their own model output.
