Development Operation Engineer (ARM-related)

 

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Dev/Ops Engineer for its Earth Sciences Informatics portfolio. This role involves researching and developing modular, scalable software tools and infrastructure to support data center operations in the Earth, climate, and environmental sciences, including the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Data Center.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with the ARM Data Center to process, archive, and distribute atmospheric observations globally, providing computational infrastructure and analysis tools for the scientific community.
  • Develop and operate data analysis workflows at scale in a computing cluster environment.
  • Design and develop solutions for increasing volumes of historical and streaming data analysis on hybrid HPC and in-house computing platforms.
  • Implement maintainable solutions using parallel computing paradigms and modern toolsets such as Docker, Singularity, CI/CD pipelines with GitLab and Kubernetes, AirFlow, Python, R, BASH, and Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Deploy and configure scripts using GitLab CI/CD pipelines and develop comprehensive documentation.
  • Stay updated on new technologies and techniques to meet programmatic requirements.
