Breakout Description

Session to discuss current methods of retrieving data quality information and visualizing data with online tools.

Main Discussion

The presentation was an open discussion of the tools available to users from the ARM Data Quality (DQ) Office. Some of the tools described: web-service for Data Quality Reports (DQRs), online interactive plotting tools at the DQ Office, static plot browsing at DQ Office, ways to contact the ARM program with an issue, where to find data quality information, and a basic overview of the DQ Office.

Key Findings

The session was attended by two data users and about ten ARM infrastructure personnel. The low interest from data users suggests we may need to do a better job of inviting them to data quality discussions or informing them of the need to be involved with data quality discussions. The data users didn’t provide feedback for most of the session but appeared to be most interested in our discussion on software code examples that can be easily implemented to apply data quality information from embedded quality control flags and/or DQRs to the data. This suggests they were less interested in the details behind ARM data quality analyses and more interested in knowing how to apply the results of the analyses to their data.

Issues

For simplicity, the DQ Office suggested that data users should use problems@arm.gov to contact ARM for any issues or questions related to ARM data. It was pointed out that the method for contacting ARM with questions and/or problems may change from problems@arm.gov to a different email address with the new ARM website, and that the distribution list for the email needs to be checked. It was also pointed out that the word “problems” in the current email could have a negative connotation that may make some users hesitant to provide feedback.

Needs

Update Archive DD Tool and delivery of DQRs to indicate quality color.
Look into creating a single web page or adding better links to online plotting and static plotting with the Archive DD Tool.

Action Items

Continue to provide code snippets to users to make use of ARM data, primarily data quality information, easier and more inviting.
